Decorating - Dark Walls

At Age of Reason HQ we're always blown away to see the fabulous home interiors our customers post on Instagram. Artist Pati Robins has always amazed us with her playfully styled dark interior images. She even inspired us to paint our studio dark grey. Using heaps of creativity, she's curated this eclectic haven in a disabled-adapted bungalow. Here she shares her top 10 tips on daring to go Dark.
Pati's Top 10
1-Go big or go home - Forget a feature wall - Paint it all and let dark colours hug you. You might think that dark colours will make a room appear smaller but that's not true; dark colours can cleverly make space appear bigger by "erasing the corners" as you won't notice them.
2-Natural light, does it really matter? The short answer is no ! Not every dark home have a floor to ceiling windows - so pick up your favourite colour tester pot and swatch it on all 4 walls so you can have a general idea of how colour will look in certain area - you might want to go a a shade or two lighter or darker. Well placed lighting will be your friend later.
3 - Chose your vibe – Gentleman’s club, glam, eclectic or moody boho - any colour and style will work perfectly with the dark walls .
Gentleman’s club - Think rich browns, muted colours in similar tones to a wall or furniture, dim lights and patterned rugs.
Rock glam - go wild with colours and pattern. If you’re a neon lover this look is made for you. Pick 2 of your favourite popping colours and splash them here and there as accessories. Add a bit of bold patterned soft furnishings like bright cushions, plus metallic details and you’re rock and rollin!
Eclectic - If you love a mixture of styles, or are collector -in this look anything goes - mix and match your favourite pieces throwing few unexpected items into the mix.
Boho - Think colour pattern and texture -It's natural and bright colours, it's loads of greenery. Your dark walls will make everything in your home appear brighter.
4- Felling arty? - You are in the luck! Dark walls make an excellent backdrop for displaying your art collection drawing the eye in to detail. Shake it all up by adding few wall accessories like textiles or plates into the mix.
5- Go green! -Plants are making a comeback, and no wonder as plants make the space feel alive. There are few options for indoor plants that love low light spaces as well as are low maintenance - some of them include Dracaena, Sansevieria (Snake Plant), Neanthe Bella (Parlor Palm), Zamioculcas Zamiifolia (ZZ Plant). But if you are a serial plant killer like me ( Yes, I killed a cactus) - Then there are loads of realistic faux plants available on the market. Many look so real you can’t tell the difference. Try Wylde Home for great faux options.
6- Mega blocks - playing with scale - I am yet to see a piece of furniture that does not look great against dark walls. From natural wood furniture to boldly painted pieces, they all work. Don’t forget to play with scale and mix and match textures for extra interest.
7-Movie night - is your tv is an eyesore ? Dark walls are perfect for camouflaging your tv making it not becoming a feature in the room. The thing is most of us have a TV, and when hiding it in the cupboard isn’t an option dark paint is your bff x
8- Precious Metal - Dark walls love a bit of bling! Mix some of your favourite metalics in the room and watch it come alive. Every room needs a touch of silver gold or copper.
9- Time saver - Good quality paint is a great time saver – I’ve had great results with some paints in just one coat! A nice even finish will make all the difference. I always say " It’s only paint - if you don't like it it is easy to repaint- otherwise you will always wonder what if?" Try Valspar Premium V700 paints for great quality.
10-Rock on - The most important advice I could give to anyone is - be yourself, don’t decorate for others approval. It’s your home; You and You alone should love it. If you do, you'll feel relaxed and comfortable in it. We only have one life - lets live it the way we want to. So create a space unique and personal to you.
