We're on a mission to end sweatshop fashion with a range of playful scarves, cushions and womenswear. We want our products to be the best fashion and home pieces you've ever owned. Our belief is that sustainable goods can be exciting, indulgent and effortless.
In 2010 our designer Ali Mapletoft was a music video and animation director with an eye for styling. She was also an avid scarf collector, but struggled to find luxurious silk scarves from brands who valued human and environmental sustainability. Most big luxury brands still won't share information about who's making their scarves. Ali saw a need for fun, beautiful silk scarves made ethically with an emphasis on quality and sustainability. The birth of her daughter motivated Ali to move away from video direction and into fashion.
She chose the name Age of Reason to reflect her anti-sweatshop ethos, after the 18th century Enightenment when ideas about human equality, early feminism and the abolition of slavery began to thrive. Her next step was to partner with a seamstress and printer right here in the UK. Since then Ali has produced 12 collections and her work has popped up in a variety of locations from Liberty London to Galeries Lafayette Beijing,
A scarf is one of the most versatile wardrobe pieces you'll ever own. The ability to twist and knot it in infinite ways is extremely liberating. You can transform yourself in 10 seconds with a good scarf. Ours are made from the loveliest silk, and softest cashmere modal we can find. They become treasured possessions very quickly.
Our womenswear has evolved from our love of silk and print. The collection became a reality after Ali spent a year in 2014 only buying clothing if she could meet the person who'd physically made them. Inspired by what she saw, she's added bomber jackets, silk trousers and shirt dresses to the mix. We source custom made zips, sustainable buttons made from recycled materials, and we create the patterns at our sister studio The Pin House in Yorkshire. We've developed our ranges to suit women of all ages, and we now photograph them un-retouched for our lookbooks.
We love nothing better than creating new ranges, so we developed playfully punk silk cushions to embellish your home. We like to do our bit for the planet by using natural eco-friendly wool fibers like pure British wool filling. Our filling is sourced from sustainable UK sources, including the famous lighthouse mill at North Ronaldsay, the most Northerly of the Orkney Islands. The rare breed sheep on the island are extremely hardy and mainly eat seaweed!
The future looks exciting for Age of Reason. We're committed to improving sustainability wherever we can; we're always learning. Our relationship with The Pin House is developing as the studio grows and welcomes other British brands into the fold. We'd like to do more work with rare breeds wool from Orkney, as well as seeking out increasingly sustainable printing methods and fabrics. We hope to do more un-retouched photographic work with unusual models and fans, who's varied beauty represents something far more interesting than your average fashion spread.
